About

Dan Mason What’s the point in journalism if it doesn’t make a difference to real people’s lives? Zero.

That’s been my guiding principle as a journalist and editor for over 25 years, running newsrooms and media businesses in some of the most diverse communities going.

As a consultant, trainer and online editor for the Thomson Foundation, I train and support journalists, media managers and communication professionals in countries like Azerbaijan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Oman. My courses cover multimedia journalism, newsroom integration, blogging, social media, media management. And how to make a difference.

I also help community-focused organisations and businesses expand their reach online. And, in partnership with the Media Trust, I give my time to support the communication needs of some truly inspirational local and international charities.

A little personal stuff …

I’ve edited award-winning daily newspapers including the Coventry Evening Telegraph and Birmingham Post, and was managing editor responsible for a dozen or more newspapers and websites in London. Along the way, I’ve published magazines, niche publications and books, and was managing director of Coventry Newspapers Ltd, as part of Mirror Group plc.

Non-profit organisations I’ve chaired include new fiction publisher Tindal Street Press, Birmingham Common Purpose and the Birmingham Lifelong Learning Partnership.

I love arts and heritage (a drummer with a drama degree; head in history books or under the bonnet of classic cars), and have been proud to sit on boards driving the restoration of Birmingham Town Hall and re-launch of Coventry Transport Museum, as well as involved with Arts & Business, UnLtd, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Chambers of Commerce in Birmingham and London and two city centre marketing partnerships.

If I don’t answer your tweet, I’m probably pruning roses or in the middle of nowhere with my walking boots on. But I will respond, promise …
