WHAT I DO
ABOUT
A good chunk of my career was spent as editor-in-chief of award-winning daily newspapers including the Coventry Evening Telegraph and Birmingham Post, before becoming a trainer and consultant. I was also managing editor of a group of newspapers and websites around London and managing director of Coventry Newspapers Ltd. Today, it’s a privilege to train journalists and media professionals in countries facing challenge or change.
Non-profit organisations I’ve chaired include the new fiction publisher Tindal Street Press and the Birmingham Lifelong Learning Partnership. I’ve been proud to be involved with trusts driving the restoration of Birmingham Town Hall and re-launch of Coventry Transport Museum, as well as with Arts & Business and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Sometimes I find time for jazz, classic cars and hiking. Thank you for visiting.

MEDIA Convergence, digital storytelling, citizen journalism, social media, data … whatever labels you choose, things are changing fast. I simply try to combine over 25 years of hands-on journalism and leadership with effective tools to help build stronger, connected communities. My workshops are built on collaboration.
TRAINING I design and deliver custom-built workshops, lasting from a few hours to several weeks, including online journalism, social media, ethics, blogging, video, audio, photography, liveblogging, mobile, election coverage, enterprise, inbound marketing and print skills. Contact me for more information.
CONSULTANCY Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes can make the difference. Sometimes extra skills are what’s needed – or just an extra pair of hands. For me, it’s about making the difference AFTER I’ve finished, whether doing a training audit, helping launch new products, writing a marketing plan or improving workflow efficiency.
